Bring on the Night

I know I said I was going to post this last night on twitter but yeah, I got really sleepy and decided to do this in the morning. Before I go on. Don't forget until 11:59pm tonight I'm doing a 100 follower giveaway for a copy of Wicked Game. Click here to enter.

Bring on the Night is the is the third in the WVMP series and not the last. Which of course I'm excited about. This has to be one of my favorite series.

We meet up with Ciara and Shane who are still in love. They seem to have the perfect human and vampire relationship. Shane is working at the radio station while Ciara is finishing up college and her training at the Control. Just when things seem to be going well, disaster hits. Something is going around town. Dead bodies are showing up. People are dying and zombies are appearing. What else could go wrong? Unfortunately I can't tell you. There is a major change for Ciara in this book and one little mention of a scene could give it away. We'll just say Ciara and her relationship with Shane will be a lot different by the end of the book.

I thought it was great we got to see more of the DJ vampires. We even get to see Monroe. Jim, you still wanted to slap. Actually you wanted Shane to just hit him. I'm hoping by the end of the book series we get to see something along those lines.

Dexter, the vampire dog is still a cutie in this book. I want one just like him. Does it count if my puppy is going through her teething faze and continues to bite skin? :)

If you haven't read the series, pick it up!!! Now we just have to wait until 2011 for the next book.

Monday, July 26, 2010

Let's get this book club rolling...

Before we get started on the discussion of Mind Games by Carolyn Crane. Let's introduce ourselves. Is there a book you have been dying to read? Let us know. We'll put it on our list. There is always room to discuss books of new and old.

My name is Robyn and I'm from northeast Ohio. I have been a fan of reading for so long I can't even remember a time I didn't have a book in my hand. It just seems like yesterday I was curled up reading books like Ramona or The Baby-Sitters Club. Here I am now at the age of thirty loving all things urban fantasy and paranormal romance. My all time favorite author is and will always be Jane Austen. I love her writing. I do have a dream of one day writing my own book. It's one of the many things I have listed on my bucket list. Can't wait to discuss Mind Games and many more books with everyone. What books do I hope to read? I do want to read the Downside Ghost series, Accidental Friends, and the list goes on.

And now Melissa :).

Hello! Glad to have you joining us!

My name is Melissa. I'm from South western Pennsylvania. I was a fan of Choose Your Path books when I was younger, but spent more time outside creating worlds to play in. When in the woods with my brother and cousins we had created places like the Vine World where we could climb and swing on all the vines with different creatures to play with us, and other places where the little friendly faeries lived and the sun shone through the trees perfectly on their center stage. We had the wild imaginations of normal kids running free. I really found my reading nitch when I got laid off from my overly-full time job in 2007. I started reading Fantasy books and got hooked on a discussion forum that suggested amazing books, then got into Urban Fantasy and such. It has been down hill from there. I have a vast collection going now of books I love, books to read, and books I want. There is no stopping now. As for listing some favorite authors... that one is hard for me. I have read many different authors and love them for different reasons. But for just a few: Marjorie M. Liu, Nicole Peeler, Brandon Sanderson, Ken Scholes, and Raymond E. Feist. Although there are many others coming up very close to these authors. I am kind of a 'young' reader in a sense, but I am trying to make up for it.

Hope you enjoy reading and discussion books with us, now and in the future. Any suggestions please let us know... I am always looking for a good book.

Title: Bring on the Night
Series: WVMP Radio
Author:
Jeri Smith-Ready
Goodreads Summary:
Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin seems to finally have it all. A steady job at WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock 'n' Roll. A loving relationship with the idiosyncratic but eternally hot DJ Shane McAllister. A vampire dog who never needs shots or a pooper-scooper. And after nine years, it looks as if she might actually finish her bachelor's degree!

But fate has other plans for Ciara. First she must fulfill her Faustian bargain with the Control, the paranormal paramilitary agency that does its best to keep vampires in line. Turns out the Control wants her for
something other than her (nonexistent) ability to kick undead ass. Her anti-holy blood, perhaps?

Ciara's suspicions are confirmed when she's assigned to a special-ops division known as the Immanence Corps, run by the Control's oldest vampire and filled with humans who claim to have special powers. To a confirmed skeptic like Ciara, it sounds like a freak fest. But when a mysterious, fatal virus spreads through Sherwood—and corpses begin to rise from their graves—Ciara will not only get a crash course in zombie-killing, but will be forced to put her faith, and her life itself, in the hands of magic

Title: Deadtown
Series: Deadtown
Author: Nancy Holzner
Goodreads Summary:
They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders — but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…

Vicky’s demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that’s taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky’s love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown’s citizens.

But now Vicky’s got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston’s magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she’s the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it.

Title: The Iron Daughter
Series: Iron Fey
Author: Julie Kagawa
Goodreads Summary:

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron Fey, iron-bound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her. Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's alone in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

*I won this from Melissa's My World...in words and pages...Can't wait to read it.
Title:
Tracking the Tempest
Series: Jane True
Author:
Nicole Peeler
Goodreads Summary:
Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and Ryu - Jane's bloodsucking boyfriend - can't let a major holiday go by without getting all gratuitous. An overwhelming dose of boyfriend interference and a last-minute ticket to Boston later, and Jane's life is thrown off course.

Ryu's well-intentioned plans create mayhem, and Jane winds up embroiled in an investigation involving a spree of gruesome killings. All the evidence points towards another Halfling, much to Jane's surprise...

Vampire Academy Graphic Novel Cover

I saw this and got really excited. I love the Vampire Academy series as many know. It turns out the series will be made into a graphic novel. I don't know if all the books will be turned to graphic novels but either way I can't wait. All we have right now is the cover. I'm not sure that's how I pictured Dimitri.

Black Dust Mambo

Black Dust Mambo is the first in a new series by Adrian Phoenix. I believe this series will be called, Hoodoo.
Kallie Riviere is a hoodoo who lives in the world of magic. She comes to New Orleans for the annual carnival hosted by the Hecatean Alliance. Just when she thinks she meets this great nomad her world comes tumbling down.
No one close to her is safe. It will take research and magic to find out who wants to kill her. This person doesn't care who gets in the way. They'll do whatever it takes. Along the way she meets Layne, a nomad. Who finds he needs to help protect her. Will protecting her be enough to keep her safe though?
Just like any other book by Phoenix. I loved it and could not put it down. I hope we don't have to wait long for the next book. You are definitely left wondering what's in store for our Kallie and Layne. If you love her Maker's Song series you will love this one.

Book turned Movie Sunday

Have you ever read a book and went, "that is so me." Well I remember seeing the preview for He's Just Not That Into You and thinking this will be a cute movie. Come to find out the movie is based off a self help book. So me being the late twenties single woman that I was went out and bought the book. And yes when I went to the bookstore I did one of those looks before you go into the self help section just in case you see someone you know. We've all done it.

I'm pretty sure I'm one of the few people who liked this book. It didn't get me a man or anything, lol. But there were a few things in there where I've gone, "oh that is so me."

Going back to the movie now. I really liked this movie. Sure I like the happy endings but what was nice about this one was the ending. Not everyone got their happy ending. It was almost reality but you knew the characters would be alright someday. As much as we don't want to admit it. We have that guy friend who has cheated. We know that woman who was in the affair. We also know that woman who is now divorce because of that man.

Which character could I relate to? There were a couple. I think my favorite was when Drew Barrymore's character talks about the technology of trying to get with a man. I have said stuff like that, lol. What about you? Did you like the self-help book? Maybe you liked the movie but never thought of reading the book. Was there a character you could relate to?

Twice Bitten

Finished the third in the Chicagoland Vampire series and that book was Twice Bitten. Just like the first two books I loved this one.

This one picks up after the second book in the series. The shifters play a bigger role. Gabriel comes to Chicago and it's Merit's job to protect him. As Merit does her job her relationship with Ethan seems to become a yo-yo. It's good, it's bad, and it's good. You get the idea.

I'm not sure what else to say about the plot without giving too much away. All I can say is. Wait until chapter eight. That is all.

I feel like Merit is growing in this one. She is becoming more aware of her vampirism. She is also realizing what her job as a Sentinel means. She is also making Cadogan more of a home.

Am I Team Ethan or Team Morgan? I'm going to have say Team Ethan as of right now. If you remember from my last posts on the last two books. I went back and forth. Sure I think Ethan is the vampire for her but who knows how the next book will go.

I can't wait for the next one and I think we have a year to go. Either way, I'm excited.

Accidentally Catty

I still have to read this series. So many to catch up on but I did buy the first three from Half Price and they are waiting for me to be read :). Anyways saw the cover for the upcoming one and love it.

Book Excerpt

Jocelyn Drake's Wait for Dusk is now up on Harper Collin's website with an excerpt. I haven't read the series yet but should be starting soon. Click here if you want to check it out.

Last Sacrifice

Many of us have seen this cover around or at least something very familiar but Richelle Mead made it official on her blog. I really can't wait to see how the series ends. I'm also sad it's ending.

Title: Twice Bitten
Series:
Chicagoland Vampires
Author:
Chloe Neill
Goodreads Summary: Merit, Chicago’s newest vampire, is learning how to play well with others. Other supernaturals, that is. Shapeshifters from across the country are convening in the Windy City, and as a gesture of peace, Master Vampire Ethan Sullivan has offered their leader a very special bodyguard: Merit. Merit is supposed to protect the Alpha, Gabriel Keene—and to spy for the vamps while she’s at it. Oh, and luckily Ethan’s offering some steamy, one-on-one combat training sessions to help her prepare for the mission.

Merit must accept the assignment, even though she knows that she’ll probably regret it. And she’s not wrong. Someone is gunning for Gabriel Keene, and Merit soon finds herself in the line of fire. She’ll need all the help she can get to track down the would-be assassin, but everywhere she turns, there are rising tensions between supernaturals—not least between her and a certain green-eyed, centuries old master vampire.

Title: Black Dust Mambo
Series: Hoodoo
Author:Adrian Phoenix
Goodreads Summary: "There will be times, girl, when all your magic ain't going to be enough, times when it will seem to dry up like mud under the noonday sun, or even make matters worse . . ."

Kallie Riviere, a fiery Cajun hoodoo apprentice with a talent for trouble, finds herself smack-dab in the middle of one of those times her mentor warned her about when she visits New Orleans to attend the Hecatean Alliance's annual carnival: her hard-bodied conjurer hookup ends up dead in her blood-drenched bed. And he was killed by something that Kallie would never dream of touching -- the darkest of dark juju, soul-eating juju -- a black dust hex that may have been meant to kill her.

Now Kallie has to use every bit of hoodoo knowledge and bayou-bred mojo she possesses to clear her own name and find the killer -- even as that dark sorcerer hunts Kallie and her friends. But Kallie's search for the truth soon leads her in a direction she never anticipated -- back home to Bayou Cypres Noir, and to Gabrielle LaRue, Kallie's aunt, protector, and hoodoo mentor . . . who is looking more and more like she just might be the one who wants Kallie dead.

A Giveaway Coming Your Way

Hey everyone! Hope your weekend didn't go as fast as mine. Anyways, just letting you know that I decided to do a 100 Follower Giveaway. What book will I be giving away? Unfortunately I'm not sure yet. I'm torn by a few great authors. I should know by the end of the week. I might even add something to giving away with the book. Of course I'm not going to tell you than it wouldn't be a surprise, lol. Keep your eye out for the post when I'm ready to do the giveaway.

Movie Sunday

This weekend's movie is The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. I grew up loving the series. If there is one version I still love to this day is the one from 1979.

Those who watch it for the first time years later probably will find it corny. I say though if you are a fan of the series, check this cartoon out. It might not be the action live version but it's a good one.

Title:
Blood and Chocolate
Series: N/A
Author: Annette Curtis Klause
Goodreads Summary: Characterizing the adolescent experience as monstrous is not exactly a new idea. M.T. Anderson's woefully confused teen vampire in Thirsty and Jean Thesman's reluctant young witch in The Other Ones serve as excellent examples of this metaphor set to fiction. But no one really captures how our hormones make us howl as well as Annette Curtis Klause. Blood and Chocolate chronicles the longings and passions of one Vivian Gandillon, teenage werewolf. Her pack family, recently burned out of their West Virginia home by suspicious neighbors, has resettled in a sleepy Maryland suburb. At her new school, Viv quickly falls for sensitive heartthrob Aiden, a human--or "meat-boy," as her pack calls him. Soon she is trying to tame her undomesticated desires to match his more civilized sensibilities. "He was gentle. She hadn't expected that. Kisses to her were a tight clutch, teeth, and tongue... His eyes were shy beneath his dark lashes, and his lips curved with delight and desire--desire he wouldn't force on her... he was different." But Vivian's animal ardor cannot be stilled, and she must decide if she should keep Aiden in the dark about her true nature or invite him to take a walk on her wild side.

Klause poetically describes the violence and sensuality of the pack lifestyle, creating a hot-blooded heroine who puts the most outrageous riot grrrls to shame. Blood and Chocolate is a masterpiece of adolescent angst wrapped in wolf's clothing, and its lovely, sensuous taste is sure to be sweet on the teenage tongue. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

Mary Higgins Clark was my introduction to Mystery/Suspense many, many years ago. I've been so bad about not reading her latest stuff in the past few years, so now it's time play catch up.

Title:
Where Are You Now?
Series: N/A
Author: Mary Higgins Clark
Goodreads Summary:
From America's Queen of Suspense comes a gripping tale of a young woman trying to unravel the mystery of a family tragedy -- a quest with terrifying repercussions.

It has been ten years since twenty-one-year-old Charles MacKenzie Jr. ("Mack") went missing. A Columbia University senior, about to graduate and already accepted at Duke University Law School, he walked out of his apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side without a word to his college roommates and has never been seen again. However, he does make one ritual phone call to his mother every year: on Mother's Day. Each time, he assures her he is fine, refuses to answer her frantic questions, then hangs up. Even the death of his father, a corporate lawyer, in the tragedy of 9/11 does not bring him home or break the pattern of his calls.

Mack's sister, Carolyn, is now twenty-six, a law school graduate, and has just finished her clerkship for a civil court judge in Manhattan. She has endured two family tragedies, yet she realizes that she will never be able to have closure and get on with her life until she finds her brother. She resolves to discover what happened to Mack and why he has found it necessary to hide from them. So this year when Mack makes his annual Mother's Day call, Carolyn interrupts to announce her intention to track him down, no matter what it takes. The next morning after Mass, her uncle, Monsignor Devon MacKenzie, receives a scrawled message left in the collection basket: "Uncle Devon, tell Carolyn she must not look for me."

Mack's cryptic warning does nothing to deter his sister from taking up the search, despite the angry reaction of her mother, Olivia, and the polite disapproval of Elliott Wallace, Carolyn's honorary uncle, who is clearly in love with Olivia.

Carolyn's pursuit of the truth about Mack's disappearance swiftly plunges her into a world of unexpected danger and unanswered questions. What is the secret that Gus and Lil Kramer, the superintendents of the building in which Mack was living, have to hide? What do Mack's old roommates, the charismatic club owner Nick DeMarco and the cold and wealthy real estate tycoon Bruce Galbraith, know about Mack's disappearance? Is Nick connected to the disappearance of Leesey Andrews, who had last been seen in his trendy club? Can the police possibly believe that Mack is not only alive, but a serial killer, a shadowy predator of young women? Was Mack also guilty of the brutal murder of his drama teacher and the theft of his taped sessions with her?

Carolyn's passionate search for the truth about her brother -- and for her brother himself -- leads her into a deadly confrontation with someone close to her whose secret he cannot allow her to reveal.

She got quiet. "I'm not responding to that," she finally said. Margot, Katherine, and I grinned at one another, figuring that was answer enough.
